The Modern Art Gallery is now open....

Modern Art, like music, is all around us, in everything we see, hear, smell and taste. In the movie August Rush, Evan Taylor says he hears music all around him: in the moving train, the wind in the trees and the steps of people on the pavement. The secret is to train your mind to experience what the artists see, feel, smell and hear when they pick up subjects for paintings in “life” as it passes by.

Jim Housefield of The Austin Museum of Art says: "Modern art was born in the 19th century out of a newly insistent sense that art and life must merge." This movement embraces the thought of living with art and not separating art from everyday life and living.

Modern art lovers, and haters for that matter, this is our forum to engage, look and learn about this wonderful breakaway period in art history.

We start off with two exhibitions by local South African Artists.

THREE COLOURS RED
BY ARTHUR BLAKE

BY ARTHUR BLAKE

Arthur Blake, abstract expressionist, fell in love with the work of Jackson Pollack. Blake experiments with different media and abstract expressionist styles. Blake does not attempt to create any form other than to experiment with pure movement, colour and texture. Many current abstract expressionists create form by manipulating the flow of the medium used to create a painting, e.g. a sunsets. Blake, however, finds the free movement of the paint and what is being created by its free movement fascinating and stimulating.

NATASHA MACHALONE
BY RICO VIVIERS

Rico's 50 painting projects, typically of the modern movement, is to create not what is presented but to create images perceived in the artist own mind. The idea for this project was formed more that 20 years ago while Rico was still studying. During 2006 Rico finally decide that he had the stomach to start this project of sheer endurance. His saddest moment, and there were many, during the 3 years it took to finish the project was that his father, also an artist, died before he could show him the completed work. The set of 50 painting will be sold on auction on eBay during January 2010.

The future.

Besides regular exhibitions our aim in The Modern Art Gallery will be to connect you to as much information as possible through our own research and links to other websites on the subject of modernism, it's thoughts as well as the cross pollination between modern architecture and modern music derived from the modern movement.

We will walk you through all aspects of the art form and also endeavour to exhibit works that you can buy in our exhibitions, current and hopefully later works by the old masters.

As we grow we would like to serve the:

connecting you with the vibrant modern art world .

Every month we will feature one of the old Masters like Kandinski as well as one of the more contemporary artists living and working today.kandinsky
